What is the FIRE number and how is it calculated?

FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. Your FIRE number is the corpus you need to sustain your current lifestyle indefinitely without working. It is calculated by dividing your annual expenses by your safe withdrawal rate (SWR). For example, if you spend ₹6 lakh per year and use a 4% SWR, your FIRE number is ₹1.5 crore.

The safe withdrawal rate, popularised by the Trinity Study, suggests that withdrawing 4% of your portfolio annually (adjusted for inflation) has a high probability of lasting 30+ years. In India, with higher inflation, many FIRE enthusiasts use 3-3.5% for additional safety margin.

This calculator shows three FIRE variants: Lean FIRE (frugal lifestyle at 70% expenses), Regular FIRE (current lifestyle), and Fat FIRE (upgraded lifestyle at 150% expenses). It also shows how long it will take you to reach FIRE at your current savings rate, and what you would need to save monthly to hit a target date.
